Farm River State Park, East Haven

Farm River State Park

This state park is truly a hidden gem. Only 35 minutes away, I had never heard of this small but special state park basically nestled in a neighborhood on the water. The 61 acre park is "relatively new" earning its state park designation in 1998. I visited in peak foliage, late October and the park was absolutely beautifully decorated in every shade of Autumn. On a sunny weekday, I also had the trail to myself.

The trail starts off sharing a route with the Shoreline Greenway Trail which is a new and well maintained multi-use trail. The trail goes over cute littles bridges before meeting up with a gravel road or a blue marked single track. There are several little scenic overlooks along the way which give you a view of the marsh and sound below.

While there isn't a ton of hiking options, these trails to combine serene woods, a quiet marsh, and water views. This would be a great spot to spot birds, or just a quick way to stretch your legs somewhere peaceful.  I hiked for about 30 minutes/1.25 miles along the smaller blue loop which takes you along the self guided nature trail where the trees and various features are numbered. There is also a separate marine entrance further south.
