The Park Cafe - Salt Lake City, Utah

There are so many different kinds of breakfast joints.  You have the diner type, the fancy brunch type, the grab a sandwich to go type, the bagel and pastry type, and lets not forget the buffet variety.  While they are all delicious in their own right, I am a big fan of comfort food.  Easy cheesy and carby, just the way I like it.

Thankfully, two breakfast spots with great comfort food are a few miles down the road by Liberty Park here in Salt Lake City. The first one, Pig and A Jelly Jar I reviewed last year.  I have since been back (about a month ago) and loved the spot even more.  They make a mean comforting southern breakfast (get the chicken biscuits and gravy) and some amazing jams.

Just around the corner from Pig and A Jelly Jar is another amazing breakfast joint with a large crowd, right by Liberty Park.  We have been meaning to go for a while, but the long lines always scared us off.  Finally on a sunny Sunday morning, we packed up the car and headed to The Park Cafe to see how long the line was and get some delicious breakfast.

We got to The Park Cafe and joined the crowds in front of the building, holding hot coffee and waiting for breakfast.  There is a large pot of hot coffee just inside the doorway, where you can help yourself to a hot cup of joe while you wait for your table (loved this simple, little touch!)  We waited outside with Olive and requested a seat out on covered deck (with heaters and all).

Despite the crowds, the line moved quick and soon we moved our coffees over to a table outside on the deck.  Breakfast is simple and classic, and everything on the menu is under $8.  It is hard to find good food at a good price, but The Park Cafe delivers.

After glancing at the menu and the specials board, we decided on corned beef hash with poached eggs.  Oh, and a side of french toast because dammit, sometimes you just need pancakes or french toast on the side. The corned beef hash was absolutely delicious, with real cuts of shredded home cooked corn beef, peppers, onions, and potatoes. The eggs were eggs, and the toast was your average store bought toast, but that hash was seven shades of wonderful.

The french toast was also great, nice thick cuts with butter, powdered sugar, and maple syrup.  An amazingly unhealthy but ever so satisfying breakfast, centered around a simple menu, no frills place, and comforting food.  The building is simple, the service quick, and the prices are great.

They also have a lunch menu, and after having breakfast, I will have to be back to try out lunch.  Don't let the lines outside the building scare you away.  Put your name in, and grab a hot coffee or go for a walk around Liberty Park.
